Biblical Wisdom for Everyday Life: Insights from Proverbs and James

Updated: Jun 6, 2024

Man standing on mountain top at sunrise.
Stay close to God.

My mother had this look she would give me when I was about to do something or make a decision that wasn’t the wisest. She never lectured me or used harsh words, but she would give me that look and ask a few questions to help me see things a little differently than I might have been looking at them.

She seemed to have wisdom for everyday life experiences.

I was young, planning my dream wedding, telling her how much I was looking forward to getting married outside.

She asked me if I had considered alternate plans just in case it rained.

I was living in my own little dream world at the time, thinking how perfect the day was going to be. My response was to inform her that God would not let it rain on my wedding day.

She gave me that look along with a smile that told me she saw thought my words were foolish but instead of making me feel bad she asked me if I thought I should reconsider for the benefit of my guests.

I valued her opinion and although it pained me to change my plans, we rented a beautiful room decorated in a Victorian style and I put the idea of getting married outside out of my mind.

Parents have a great impact on their children. It is up to parents to instill a love for God and His ways, while remaining open to discussion.

The day of my wedding came and the wisdom of my mother was evident. The remnants of a hurricane pushed its way up into the Midwest. That day we had torrential rain. If it had not been for my mother the whole day would have been ruined.

Some people seem to have a natural inclination toward wisdom while others live lives that show a lack of wisdom in their choices.

In Proverbs 4:5-7 we are given some great advice which applies to all of us today.

Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; Love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore, get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.

It seems there is more to the equation than just wisdom. Along with wisdom we also need understanding. It is through the use of both we can apply what we know and learn to our lives.

How do we get wisdom?

James 1:5-7

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.  For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;  he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

It is interesting that this scripture speaks of those who lack wisdom. It leaves the decision on your need for wisdom in your hands. Do you lack wisdom, or do you feel you have enough already?

I think most people would agree there is an ongoing need for wisdom in every aspect of our lives. We need wisdom in raising our children, selecting a career, choosing a mate, buying a home, and in our spiritual life. Wisdom is needed throughout our day-to-day lives, and it is right there for the asking.

May you find the wisdom you seek.

Cherish the Journey!
