Children are naturally attracted to water. Without a true understanding of the dangers, little ones will often put themselves and friends in situations that can lead to accidental drownings. Summer will soon be upon us and with it will come plenty of opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing and other water activities.
We can pray for our children and their safety, but as parents, we must also be proactive in educating them and helping them see potential dangers.
Kids Don't Float: Water Safety helps children understand the dangers in a way that is easy to comprehend and fun to read.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the United States children ages 1-4 die from drowning more than any other cause of death. For children ages 5-14, drowning is the second leading cause of death, with vehicle crashes being the first.
These are sobering statistics. No one wants to believe it can happen to their family. By taking the initiative and introducing young children to the concept that some things float but kids don’t, you are not only educating them but also helping them to understand the dangers in a way that is age appropriate.
Kids Don’t Float: Water Safety is one of my best selling titles. I have had the opportunity to hear from several parents and grandparents about the impact this book has had on their little ones. A grandmother once shared an event which took place during summer vacation. She and her granddaughter were enjoying a nice walk near the lake when the little girl looked up at her and said, “Kids don’t float.” They then had a nice conversation and the little girl assured her grandmother she would wait for an adult and not get too close to the water. What a relief for her to hear!
Interested? You will find your toddler and preschooler are introduced to the idea that some things float but kids do not. Written with a rhythm children love, it offers easy to understand concepts. The last page states, “Don’t take a dare. Don’t get too close. Wait for an adult, because kids don’t float. This is the goal and hope of every parent.
Cherish the Journey, and make beautiful memories this summer.
